Recently, Cardano (ADA) has become more and more popular, and for a good reason too. More developers are now using Cardano’s infrastructure to run their public blockchain platform for smart contracts. Thus, smart contracts have made Cardano a popular cryptocurrency.

Despite, its success, possible because this is very recent, as of yet Ledger does not fully support this coin. While storage on the hardware wallet like the Ledger Nano S/X is possible, Ada’s management can only be performed externally by connecting a third-party wallet such as the Yoroi wallet to Ledger.

Today, we will show you how to manage Cardano stored on a Ledger Nano S/X device using the Yoroi wallet. Ready? Here, we go…

Before you begin: You will need to have an initialized Ledger hardware wallet, plus the Cardano app already installed on your Ledger device. Please, make sure that you also have the Ledger Live application downloaded and installed on your device.

Make sure you are using the latest version of Ledger Live.

How to get Ledger and the Yoroi Wallet started

Part a) Install the Yoroi wallet

#1. Luckily, Yoroi is a browser extension. So you can add it directly from the Chrome Web Store. Once you got it all ready to go you will see this window. Choose ‘Connect to hardware wallet’.

#2. Once you Unlocked your Ledger device and opened the Cardano app, you can go back to the Yoroi browser wallet, and after clicking Choose ‘Connect to hardware wallet’ you will get this window. Select ‘Ledger Hardware Wallet’.

#3. Select an Era, for the purpose of this tutorial we will go with ‘Byron-era (read-only) wallet.

#4. Scroll through and read the pre-requisites. When ready press ‘Next’.

#5. Next, press the ‘Connect’ button. A new window will then open where you need to select the Ledger device you’re using i.e. the Ledger Nano S or X.

#6. A new window will open where you are prompted to check and verify the ‘Export public key’ to make sure it matches that on the device. Confirm this by pressing both buttons.

#7. Finally, when this is all done, you will get a new window like the one shown below where you have the option to save the wallet. Press ‘Save’ and that’s yet. You are now in your Cardano account which you can manage using Yoroi.

Conclusion

Cardano is a good example of how cryptocurrencies can grow in demand over time. Their infrastructure and value get recognized, leading to their token to rise in popularity. As of today, Cardano can be stored on Ledger but not managed. This tutorial provides the basis on how to connect your Ledger device to the Yoroi wallet so that you can start managing Cardano as seamlessly as possible. Enjoy!
